3rd Annual Lompoc Triathlon

alt

The 3rd Annual Lompoc Triathlon and Junior Triathlon took place on Saturday July 18th at the Lompoc Aquatics Center. The event drew athletes from all over California with racers coming from as far north as Santa Rosa and as far south as Carlsbad. The number of participants was up significantly from last year with 139 adults and 45 children competing in various categories.

The first heat for the adults was at 8:00am; adults completed a 500 yard swim, 11 mile bike and 3 mile run and had the option to compete in one of several divisions including road bike, mountain bike, coed relay, male relay, female relay, family relay and military relay. The junior triathlon started at 11:00am. Children age 6-10 years old completed a 50 yard swim, 1 mile bike, and a one quarter mile run. Children 11-14 years old completed a 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike and a half mile run.

alt
The triathlon was organized by Recreation Supervisor Jeff Storie and his staff at the Aquatic Center along with other Parks & Recreation staff. An event of this type requires a substantial amount of planning and hard work and everyone involved should be congratulated for a job well done. With about a 30% increase in participation from last year, the triathlon looks like it will continue to bring people to visit Lompoc in the future.

The event also succeeded in bringing out entire families to join in the fun. Husbands and wives raced the relays together while brothers, sisters and cousins competed in the youth events. Friends and family members who competed in the adult triathlon earlier that morning were out there cheering on the junior triathletes in their races. For many kids this was their first experience racing in a triathlon, but every athlete that raced rose to the challenge. There was even one young athlete who raced his bike with the training wheels on!
  alt
In the overall adult competition the top three male athletes were Sam Williams in 1st place (57:27), Jason Coulie in 2nd (59:15) and Greg Eisen in 3rd place (1:00:26). The top three females were Marguerite Harris in 1st (1:04:13), Nikki Peirtsegaele in 2nd (1:05:41) and Christine Reed in 3rd (1:05:50).
