The Childhood Obesity Summit has three specific outcomes:
Creating dialogue between a cross section of the business community and health professionals for the purpose of addressing the economic, environmental and program elements that can impact the obesity and sedentary lifestyle of Lompoc’s children and adults.
Exposing business partners and health professionals to excellent educational presentations and best practices by a nationally known expert and an opportunity for continued discussion with facilitated breakout sessions.
Developing a core list of critical issues and consensus among stakeholders to be discussed in more detail at future Lompoc Valley Healthy Kids Initiative Taskforce meeting.
We must all be part of the solution to begin reducing this health epidemic. The Childhood Obesity Summit will be an opportunity to generate cross-discipline discussions on solutions to Lompoc’s obesity and sedentary lifestyle issues. The summit and subsequent Healthy Kids Initiative Taskforce meetings will be focused on formulating strategies to develop Healthy Eating and Physical Activities Plans for Lompoc that will put into action long-term solutions to increase physical activity.

Lompoc is facing an obesity epidemic
-
Almost 1 out of 3 students in Lompoc in grades 7, 9, and 11 are at risk of or are overweight
-
Non-traditional students, males, and Latino/as appear to be at higher risk of being overweight
-
Overweight in childhood and adolescence is linked to lifelong weight struggles plus greater risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions related to obesity
